Discover the Fife Coastal Path: Walks Around Anstruther

Stretching over 117 miles from Kincardine to Newburgh, the Fife Coastal Path is one of Scotland’s most loved long-distance walking routes—and one of the best ways to explore the East Neuk’s dramatic coastline, picturesque harbours, and rich wildlife.

Based at May Cottage in Anstruther, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of the most beautiful and accessible sections of the path, all within a short distance.

1. Anstruther to Pittenweem

  • Distance: 1.6 miles (2.5 km)

  • Time: 30–40 minutes

This short, scenic walk is ideal for a gentle stroll. Follow the well-maintained coastal path west out of Anstruther, passing Cellardyke Harbour before reaching the charming fishing village of Pittenweem. Along the way, look out for:

  • Seals basking on the rocks

  • Wading birds like redshanks and oystercatchers

3. Anstruther to Crail

  • Distance: 4.5 miles (7.2 km)

  • Time: 1.5–2 hours

  • Difficulty: Moderate

A slightly longer and more rugged walk east from Anstruther takes you to the beautiful village of Crail, with its cobbled streets and historic harbour. Parts of the path are grassy or rocky underfoot, so wear proper footwear. Along the way:

  • Watch for dolphins offshore (especially early morning or late afternoon)
